Council Tax in Wiltshire

Understanding your council tax bill, discounts, and how to get support if you're struggling.

Bands and rates

Properties in Wiltshire are banded A–H by the Valuation Office Agency. Band D is the reference point — other bands are calculated as a proportion of Band D. Your bill also includes a precept for town/parish councils and Wiltshire Police.

Discounts available

Single occupancy discount (25%), full-time student exemption, severe mental impairment exemption, and 100% discount for empty/unfurnished properties for up to six months. Apply directly through Wiltshire Council.

Council Tax Support

If you're on a low income, you may qualify for Council Tax Reduction (formerly Council Tax Benefit). This can reduce your bill by up to 80%. Apply via the Wiltshire Council website — you'll need details of your income, savings, and household.

If you're struggling to pay

Contact Wiltshire Council's revenues team early — they can set up a payment plan. The council also offers hardship relief in exceptional circumstances. Citizens Advice in Pewsey and Devizes can also help.
